Food update
We are continuing to work with the Lakota toward eliminating the designation of Pine Ridge as a place of food insecurity and establishing self-sufficiency. As part of this process we are negotiating for a couple of buildings in which to establish food storage and a food market and are working with local growers to help them expand their crops this year. We will be incorporating locally grown foods as well as buffalo meat into the food program. Thanks to all of you, there is real progress toward wiping out hunger on the Reservation.
If you wood .....
The pun is the last refuge of the challenged writer, but there it is.
This volunteer writer for One Spirit lives in the Rockies of Colorado at 8650 feet elevation, on lands that once belonged to the Arapahoe. It was the Arapahoe who gave the area near my home the nickname of “the place where the wind gets its revenge.” This winter, this is not an inaccurate characterization. In fact, pretty much every year sees winds continually blowing nearly all the time from late October to May.
Actual temperature this morning- not including wind chill.
Volunteer for the Most Trusted Position
One Spirit is looking for people to fill the most trusted position of Area Service Coordinator. These good people work directly with the Lakota families that we serve and will need a cell phone and computer (be computer literate) and can work from anywhere in the world.
If you have plenty of spare time and are looking for a rewarding endeavor, this might be for you. Interested volunteers should contact Jeri Baker, 570-460-6567, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Lack of Awareness of Serious Consequences
No matter which side you come down on regarding the current federal government shutdown, whether it is over a pointless wall on the border (oops, I just revealed my point of view) or the titanic struggle between politicians, there are always consequences for those who depend, at least in part, on the federal government for support and assistance.
This non-political point is one we should all be able to agree on.
