A- A A+

Last month we delivered more than 600 boxes of food to families across the Reservation. In addition, there were so many people coming to the distribution center that the line ran from the middle of this large building completely out the door. We ran out of food. More was ordered and picked up on Monday with delivery attempted to more than 70 homes during a snow storm and below zero temperatures.

In addition to the regular food distribution, we are providing food for hot meals several times a week at the Allen Youth Center. Jennifer Richards, the Program Director, reports that every time the door opens the kids come in and are looking for food.

Plans are well underway for gardens this year, a mobile food pantry, and a distribution center where both food and household goods can be stocked. The program will be designed to support gardens on the Reservation as well as to provide traditional foods: meat from the Buffalo House, choke cherry products, timpsila, homemade breads and bakery items.

Thank You

Your participation in this program has made it possible for us to consistently provide healthy food and arrive at the time now where the Lakota can take the next step to self-sufficiency. Already, it is they who grow the food, gather and process the wood for heat, staff the youth center, unload food trucks and deliver the food over miles of Reservation roads.

OST Solid Waste Shout Out

I want to give a special shout out to the Oglala Sioux Tribal Solid Waste Department who haul wood for us from a lumber company in Rapid to the Reservation to be used for heat.

Stay Tuned

We will keep you updated regularly as the season progresses toward growing and harvesting and as we see the distribution center become a reality.

A huge thank you to all of you who have made the food program possible over the years.   t is our belief that together with the Lakota we can actually end the designation of Pine Ridge Reservation as a “Food Desert."
